Having worked extensively on the development, design, and maintenance of Low-Code and Zero-Code platforms, a recent Gartner report caught my attention and inspired me to share my thoughts and insights on this rapidly growing trend in technology.

According to Gartner’s latest research, the global market for low-code technologies is predicted to reach nearly $30 billion by 2023—representing an impressive 20% growth from the previous year. This sharp rise underscores the urgent need for businesses to embrace faster, more efficient application development methods as part of their digital transformation efforts.

What Exactly Are Low-Code and No-Code Platforms?

Gartner categorizes these technologies into several types:

  • Low-Code Application Platforms (LCAP)

  • Business Process Automation (BPA)

  • Multiexperience Development Platforms (MDXP)

  • Robotic Process Automation (RPA)

  • Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS)

  • Citizen Automation and Development Platforms (CADP)

In simple terms, low-code platforms provide pre-built components and drag-and-drop tools, enabling rapid creation of applications without extensive coding. No-code platforms take it even further, often requiring no coding at all beyond simple formula entries or expressions.

Why is Low-Code Development Booming?

The answer is straightforward. Building apps from scratch is time-consuming, resource-intensive, and expensive. Ask any developer who’s had to hand-code everything—it's demanding work. Low-code and no-code platforms significantly cut down development time, allowing organizations to quickly deploy apps to automate workflows, enhance customer service, or deliver digital experiences. Instead of starting from zero, these platforms offer a shortcut, turning months of coding into mere days or weeks of assembling pre-built components.

Key Insights from Gartner's Report

Here are some notable highlights from Gartner:

  • Cloud-based low-code services (Platform as a Service, or PaaS) represent the largest market segment and are expected to grow by 26% to $12.8 billion next year.

  • North America currently accounts for 40% of global low-code spending, though the Asia-Pacific region is growing slightly faster.

  • Automation capabilities—such as workflow and process automation—are among the fastest-growing areas within the low-code sector.

Clearly, traditional coding isn’t going anywhere soon, but the surge in low-code solutions is undeniable. They offer businesses the agility and speed required to innovate and adapt quickly in our rapidly changing digital environment. For companies serious about their digital transformation, low-code could become their new best friend.
